Below are both a Google map and trail map of Echo Canyon. The specific location address is 5700 N. Echo Canyon Parkway, about 10 miles northeast of downtown Phoenix.

From a general vicinity standpoint, Camelback Mountain rests between both Camelback Road and McDowell Drive as well as between 44th and 64th street.

For a more detailed description of where to park for both the Echo and Cholla Trails view our Parking Topic or visit the Park Rules & Regulations page.

Directions to Camelback Mountain:

Echo Canyon Trail & Recreation Area: First get to McDonald Drive either from the east, travelling north on 44th street (which turns into McDonald Dr directly on the northwest side of the mountain) or by traveling south On Tatum towards Camelback Mountain. About 0.1 miles east of Tatum on McDonald is the turn for Echo Canyon Parkway on the south side of McDonald.

During busy times Echo Canyon Parkway (a residential street) will be lined with cars to the left. If the parking lot (about a quarter mile ahead) is full which, parallel parking is available on this street. The trailhead is at the east end of the parking lot. There is a rest area with a Ramada, portable-toilets, trash cans and a drinking fountain with faucet below.

Update:  As of January 15th 2014, the Echo Canyon Trail has been reopened with additional parking and improved facilities.  A roundabout positioned on McDonald now allows for an entirely new entry to the trail separate from the previous residential street.  This driveway is gated by a guard shack and additional security to more closely enforce park times.

After passing the entrance there are now two full rows of parking on either side leading up to the original parking lot.  The original parking lot has also been expanded to allow for more parking, loading, drop off and pick up locations.

The facilities at the trail-head have also been expanded.  Previously only a small shade area with a drinking fountain and port-a-potties were present.  Today the entire paved area has been expanded including full restrooms (both men’s and women’s) along with the original shaded area, fountains, trash receptacle and other seated areas.

The improvement project took nearly a year and was a $4.3 Million dollar renovation, including $450K for the roundabout alone.  Another major change during this project was the lengthening of the Echo Canyon trail.  Read more about this on our Trails Page.

Cholla Trail (east side of Camelback Mountain): Get to 64th street from Camelback Road, McDonald Dr, Chaparral Rd, or Jackrabbit Road. There is parking all along the west side of the road next to the fence for the Phoenician Golf Course. Then walk north past Vista Drive to Cholla Lane and head west. Walk roughly a quarter mile to the trailhead on the left hand side. There are no toilets, drinking fountains or other amenities on the Cholla side.
